How do I post my Job?
It's easy, click here or click Post a Job at the top of any page on the site and complete the form in as much detail as possible.
What information do I need to include?
Surveyors use your description to decide if they can do the job, so the better your description the more interest you’re likely to get. Try to include the following:
- An accurate description of the exact type of survey you need (if this isn’t clear in the Type of survey option box)
- When you would like to get the job done by
- Any unusual building features that will help the surveyor
Please don’t put any contact details or sensitive information into Job name or Job description as anyone using the site can view this section. You will have the option to provide contact details/sensitive information using the messaging system at a later stage.
You have the option of getting more than one type of survey done on the building by following the ‘Do you need more than one type of survey?’ link.
After you have posted your job you have the option to upload images, such as photographs, plans, leases, particulars, etc (format: JPG/JPEG, GIF, PNG, PDF or BMP) to help surveyors better understand your requirements. Any image that you upload will be viewable on the website as part of your job listing.
How much does it cost to post my Job?
It’s free to post a job. Surveymyhouse works by charging the surveyor a small fee if they secure a job through the website.
What happens after I post my Job?
We manually check all jobs when they are posted on the site. Once posted a confirmation email will be sent to you. Simultaneously, we will send an email notification to relevant surveyors. If you would like to invite more or specific surveyors to quote on your job, you can Find Surveyors and invite them to quote on it using the ‘Request a quote’ button, found on every surveyor’s profile. Interested surveyors will then send you messages and quotes through the site.
Remember you can edit your job description freely, using the ‘Edit job details’ link in your account, until you have started receiving quotes.
How long will it take to get quotes on my job?
Most jobs should get quotes within hours of being posted, although your level of response will depend on the time you posted it, how specialized the job is and which geographical area you live in.
I have a complicated job, can I discuss it with a surveyor?
Yes. Whilst our built in messaging facility means you can communicate securely and privately through the site, we appreciate that you may need to discuss your job outside of Surveymyhouse, and we don’t object to personal contact details being exchanged.
How can I request a quote from a specific surveyor?
Click here or click Find Surveyors at the top of any page on the site and find them using their specialism and/or post code. Press the 'Request a quote' button and we will send the surveyor an email notification and they should send you a quote or get in touch with you using the messaging facility.
How do I remove a job listing from the site?
Simply log into your account, select your job and click 'Cancel job' to remove your listing.
How will I know when I have received a quote or a message?
Every time a surveyor sends you a quote or a message, an email will be sent to your registered email address to notify you.
I’m halfway through posting my job, can I save it?
Yes, by clicking on the ‘Save job as draft’ button on the Post a Job page, you can save your job at any time before posting it and come back to complete it later in your own time.
Hiring a Surveyor
How do I choose the best surveyor to hire for my job?
Before you make the final decision about who to hire, there are a number of checks you should do to make sure you’re completely happy with your choice:
- Review their Profile and References
Each time you receive a quote from a surveyor, you can review their profile, which may contain details of their working history, professional membership and accreditations, as well as previous client references (which we personally verify).
- Review their Feedback
Probably the best way to decide on a surveyor’s suitability is to review their feedback and rating left by previous customers. Feedback can only be left by previous customers who have used Surveymyhouse. It’s important to make sure that feedback is relevant for the job you want to carry out.
- Make sure they have Insurance
Confirm that the surveyor has Professional Indemnity Insurance (which covers the surveyors liability for third party injury or damage resulting from their professional duty when providing design, advice or a service for a fee) and, depending on the type of work, that they have Public Liability Insurance (which covers the surveyors liability for any injury or damage a surveyor may do to another person or their property accidentally whilst undertaking work).
- Check their trade association membership
Does the surveyor belong to a Trade Association or professional body? Contact those organisations to verify their membership and inquire about what assurances they offer to you if things go wrong.
How many quotes can I expect to get from surveyors?
You should aim to receive several quotes for your job, but it does depend on your location and job type. If possible, we recommend getting a minimum of 3 quotes to base your hiring decision on, to ensure you get the best surveyor for the job.
What should I look for in a quote?
To help you choose the best quote for your job and ensure the job’s completed to your satisfaction, check the following points:
- Is it a fixed quote or an estimate? Estimates tend to be a rough price and subject to change. In all cases ask for a breakdown of how the price has been calculated.
- There’s a particularly low quote compared to the others, what shall I do? Check to see if they have fully understood your job description, it may be that an element of the work has been missed out which may get added onto the quote later. If this is the case, insist that the surveyor provides a revised quote using the quoting system on Surveymyhouse, this way the quote is fully documented with a written record of communications.
- Is the surveyor VAT registered and, if so, does the quote include VAT? This will have an impact on the final cost and should be clarified.
- How can I contact the surveyor? Make sure the quote clearly shows the surveyor’s name, address and telephone number, so you can arrange a time to get the job done.
Finally, there is often a trade off between price and quality of service, and going for the cheapest quote may end up costing the most in the long run.
Do Surveymyhouse perform background checks on surveyors?
No, we don’t perform background checks on surveyors, because this would be a very time-consuming process. We do ask surveyor’s for references and insurance details during the registration process. These only go some way towards checking a surveyor’s credentials. You should perform your own checks on a surveyor, and they should be able to provide you with evidence and proof of their Qualifications, Accreditations, Memberships, References, etc. It is up to you to verify any information provided by a surveyor prior to hiring.

How do I select the surveyor I want to hire for a job?
Simply log into your account, go to your job page and click on ‘Accept this quote’.
Can I accept more than one quote on my job?
Yes, you can choose to accept more than one quote on your job. If you choose to accept two or more quotes on a job, each surveyor will be sent a notification and the first surveyor to agree to do the job will be the one who is hired. Don’t worry, there’s no need to inform the other surveyors yourself, we will automatically notify those surveyors who haven’t secured the job by email and on their personal account.
Why can I accept more than one quote on my job?
If you’ve received equally good quotes for your job and can’t separate them, or you want to get the job done quickly, this lets you get on with instructing a surveyor, without having to contact us to sort it all out.
I have instructed a surveyor, do I need to inform the other surveyors who were interested?
No, we will notify other interested surveyors by email and through their account, that someone else has been hired.
If I accidentally accept a quote, can I reverse it?
Yes, you can reverse it, but you’ll need to contact us and we’ll change it for you.
Why don’t I just get the job done outside the system?
By using the Surveymyhouse website, you can hold your surveyor accountable for their work by giving feedback. Certain surveyor’s may try to convince you to get the job done outside the system by offering a discount on your quote in order to avoid paying a success fee to Surveymyhouse. Whilst this may seem like a good idea at the time, you should remember you are unable to leave feedback for them once the job has been completed. If your job goes wrong for any reason, you have lost the ability to hold them accountable for their work and you won’t be able to tell other customers about it. Ultimately, your feedback will help improve everyone’s experience by improving the reputation of honest and reputable surveyors.
Managing my Jobs
If I’ve got enough quotes and want to hire a surveyor, what shall I do?
Select the surveyor you’d like to hire and click on ‘Accept this quote’. A notification will be sent to the surveyor and once they agree to do the work, the job will automatically be closed to new quotes.
Am I obliged to use any of the surveyors who quote on my job?
No, you are not obliged to use any of the surveyors. If you decide to cancel your job, you can simply remove your job from the website by going to your account, opening the relevant job, and pressing ‘Cancel job’.
My job listing has expired, can I still hire a surveyor?
Yes, you can still hire surveyors who expressed an interest and search for more surveyors and request a quote from them too.
Rating a Surveyor and leaving Feedback
What is feedback?
Feedback is an assessment of a surveyors work given by a customer after a job has been done. Only genuine customers who have used the surveyor instructed through the Surveymyhouse website can leave feedback on them. It’s an important tool for customers to build a surveyor's reputation and make them accountable for the work they have done.
How does Feedback work?
Feedback provides a trail of a surveyor’s performance which gives the next potential customer valuable information upon which they can base their hiring decision. By holding a surveyor accountable for their work, it incentivises them to do a job to the best of their abilities. By constantly improving a surveyor’s performance, feedback will ultimately lead to a better customer experience.
My job has been completed by the surveyor, how can I leave feedback about them?
After the surveyor has completed your job, simply log into your account, find the surveyor and click on the 'Leave feedback' button. You'll be asked to leave a rating (either positive, neutral or negative) and any comments. Just remember you can’t leave any feedback until you’ve hired a surveyor through the site.
What should I base my feedback on?
Feedback should be an honest, objective and impartial evaluation of the work done. To help you decide on what level of rating and feedback you leave the surveyor for your job, consider some of the following elements of customer service:
- Quality of work
- Reliability and trustworthiness
- Value for money
- Time keeping
Remember to look at the big picture, and don’t place too much emphasis on just one of the above elements. Your feedback is taken very seriously by surveyors, it can help build their reputation and enhance their chances of getting further work through Surveymyhouse.
What comments should not be included in my feedback?
You should avoid including the following in your feedback:
- Comments that do not relate to the job
- Personal contact details
- Unprofessional, inappropriate or offensive remarks
How can I be certain the feedback is genuine?
All feedback comments undergo rigorous manual checks. Feedback can only be left once a surveyor has been hired through the site and a transaction has taken place. We will investigate any suspicious feedback and will permanently remove those persons from Surveymyhouse who try to take advantage of the system.
Once the feedback has been posted can I edit it?
No. Once feedback has been left, it cannot be edited or removed by you. This is to prevent any fraudulent changes taking place as a result of threats or intimidation to you. We reserve the right to remove any feedback which we can’t be confident is authentic.
I hired a surveyor through the site and have got a problem, what do I do?
If you’ve got a problem with a surveyor, been let down or have a dispute, we recommend following the below steps:
- Discuss it with the surveyor to see if you can reach a solution that suits both of you. The majority of surveyors want their customers to be happy and will be keen to resolve any issues amicably.
- If you can’t reach a solution, we recommend leaving feedback. Please be aware that surveyors have the right to reply to any feedback posted to the site. Their responses are posted directly beneath your feedback.
- If you are unable
to resolve an issue, you might want to seek further help or advice. A good
starting point is to check if your surveyor belongs to any trade association or
professional body. These organisations
generally have an established complaints process and will be able to give you
guidance. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors operates the Surveyors Ombudsman Service which is a dispute resolution scheme for surveyors regulated by RICS. It is there to help consumers and surveyors alike, and aims to avoid the need for expensive and time-consuming legal action for less complicated matters.
- If your surveyor is not a member of a trade association or professional body, you can contact the government consumer advice service Consumer Direct, which is supported by the Office of Fair Trading. Alternatively, try contacting your Local Trading Standards Office, who also provides help and advice.
- Another option to resolve your dispute is through independent mediation. Contact Consumer Direct, Local Trading Standards Office or your local Citizens Advice Bureau.
- If you are still unable to reach a satisfactory resolution, you may want to consider starting legal proceedings. Be aware generally this is a costly and time-consuming process and should be used as a last resort.
Why has my feedback been removed?
Very occasionally we will remove feedback from the site. We take our feedback system very seriously and make sure it is up to a high standard and is genuine, impartial, honest, objective, and unbiased. All feedback comments undergo rigorous technical and manual checks and if we can’t be confident of it’s authenticity, we will remove it.
How can I talk to you over the phone?
We have a comprehensive help section on the site and support our Customers primarily via email. Whilst presently we don't offer a full telephone support service, you can send us a message using the Contact Us form and we will endeavour to contact you at your preferred time, or otherwise as soon as possible.
How can I change my password?
Simply log-in to the ‘My Account’ section and click on ‘Change Password’. We will automatically send you an email to confirm after it has been changed.
I’m not receiving any of your emails, what shall I do?
First check the email address you registered with is correct. If this is ok, it may be that your email account provider is putting them into your spam or junk mail folder. You should be able to mark them as not spam in your email account provider and add us to your list of safe senders.
Can I send you suggestions for improving the website?
Yes please! Send us a message with your suggestions through the Contact Us form. If you'd like to talk to us over the phone, include your number and the best time to call and we’ll contact you. We are always very pleased to receive feedback, positive or negative, and we welcome suggestions on how to make our service better. We are constantly updating our website and your input is a critical part of helping shape our online community.
I have liked using Surveymyhouse. Do you accept testimonials?
Yes, absolutely! We’re exceedingly happy that you’ve enjoyed using our service and your testimonials will be received gratefully. Send us a message with your testimonial through the Contact Us form, or if you'd like to talk to us about your experience over the phone, include your number and the best time to call and we’ll contact you. Please let us know if you’re happy for us to put your name or company on the website alongside the testimonial.
I have received abusive messages through the site, what can I do about it?
Whilst we try our best to nurture a friendly online community, unfortunately we cannot guarantee the site will be free of offensive or abusive content. If you happen to be subject to such content, please do not hesitate to Contact Us. We will do our best to investigate such reports and take appropriate action if necessary.
